Abstract
Recent years have seen an increase in the installation of Closed circuit television
(CCTV), both outdoors and indoors. This increase is mainly due to high crime rates and the
fact that people want to feel more and more secured. Closed circuit television provides only a
simple motion detection system. However, these systems cannot achieve the identification of
the person who enters a certain area. Combining the development of computer vision field and
robotics, the creation of a security system for any interior can be accomplished. The paper in
hand analyses a fully automated defensive robotic system.
The aim of this work is to develop an embedded system in order to guard an area and
immediately inform the user about any unexpected events. The implementation of the system
consists of a camera and a gun (not real, but a simple toy with darts of foam). The software
for the communication between these two elements is based on motion detection and face
recognition of the person who enter its area. In order to recognize the known faces, the
software must be trained first. The information and images of known people are given by the
owner of this robotic guardian.
Excluding the above, the system is characterized by ease and immediacy and can also be
controlled remotely. For this reason, a website has been designed which allows the user to
interact with the robotic guardian. In addition, the entire system is automated, in order to
inform the administrator about the invasion, through vocal and e-mail alert messages.
This device can be installed to guard indoors, for example, homes offices, stores, and any
other place (factories, military outposts, etc.), as long as there is a power supply.
