Abstract
The care and protection of children are always the first priorities of parents. Their
upbringing during the infantile age is a sector that has always been susceptible to
improvements. The commercially distributed toys are manufactured to keep the children
company and accommodate them with their very first acknowledgment of things.
However, the parents’ demands of a toy are, ideally, many more. Having taken these
requirements into consideration and by combining the computer vision with the
embedded systems, an intelligent toy has been implemented. The aim of this toy is the
innovation in the world of toys and the provision of new capabilities.
The toy in question covers the needs both of children and parents. It has the form of
a teddy bear, in which a single board computer with a camera and a speaker are
embedded. The complete system process the live streaming video of the camera in order
to identify facial expressions. Afterwards, it reacts to the feeling recognized by putting a
sound on playback. To accomplish this feeling identification, the appropriate cascade
classifiers were trained. The video processing is the responsibility of a personal computer
with high processing power. Therefore, a connection between the computer and the single
board computer is established for data exchange. Furthermore, the toy provides access to
the video streaming, so the parents can monitor the child at all times.
The introduced toy is autonomous and portable since the connections between its
parts are all dynamic and as long as it is charged there is no need to be plugged in. In
addition, scalability is one of its characteristics as it can be enriched to recognize many
more feelings. It can be used by children of many ages to provide company and mental
growth.
